At Emerald Crest Connect, every product tells a story — not a factory story, but a human one. Our collection is built entirely around independent artisans from New Jersey and New York City, makers who chose craft over convenience and hand over machine.
## Why NJ/NYC?
The New York metropolitan area has one of the most vibrant indie craft scenes in the country. From Brooklyn ceramicists working out of shared studios to Hudson Valley leather workers with decades of apprenticeship, the talent density here is extraordinary. We sought out these makers specifically because proximity matters — it means conversations, studio visits, and a direct line from maker to customer.
## Leather Goods: A Study in Patience
Our leather artisans work with full-grain and vegetable-tanned hides sourced from tanneries that have operated for generations. Full-grain leather — used in our crossbody bags and totes — is the strongest, most durable cut of the hide. It ages with a patina unique to each owner, making every bag a record of its life.
The vegetable tanning process takes weeks. Hides are submerged in tannin-rich solutions derived from tree bark, slowly transforming raw hide into leather that will last decades. There are no shortcuts. Our makers know this, and they pass that ethic into every stitch.
## Ceramics: Fire and Intention
The ceramic makers behind our dinner plate sets, serving bowls, and vases work on kick wheels in small studios. Each piece starts as a lump of reclaimed stoneware clay and ends as something that can hold your food, your flowers, or your light.
What you'll notice when you hold one of these pieces is the weight — it is not light, and that is intentional. Thin, lightweight ceramics are factory work. Hand-thrown pottery carries the mass of the earth it came from.
## Jewelry: Recycled and Reimagined
Our jewelry artisans are committed to sustainability. The gold in our pendant necklaces, statement rings, and geometric earrings is recycled — reclaimed from old electronics and jewelry, refined, and cast fresh. No new mining. The stones are ethically sourced and, wherever possible, repurposed from antique settings.
## Supporting the Makers
When you buy from Emerald Crest Connect, a meaningful portion of every purchase goes directly to the maker. We work on a consignment model that prioritizes the artisan — because without them, there is no collection.
Meet them in our shop, and bring a piece of their work home.
